![]() ![]() I became obsessed with the Six of Crows duology by Leigh Bardugo before I had even read it, thanks to the Netflix series Shadow and Bone. I know why it was there, but it was a bit confusing and I could have gone without it. If you like morally gray characters, a seemingly impossible heist, an interesting magic system and a world like Northern Europe and Russia, then this book will suit you! (Ketterdam sounds like a mix of Amsterdam and Rotterdam to me). ![]() The world building was sublime and I was delighted to find that my own country, the Netherlands, had been used as inspiration, along with other Northern lands. Honestly, if the cast doesn't make you want to read this book, I don't know what will. SIX OF CROWS has a cast to never be forgotten, with a limping thief called Kaz Brekker (ownvoices!), a silent POC called Inej, a gambler with the name of Jesper, a curvy Grisha known as Nina Zenik (love her) and a sturdy hot fighter named Matthias. I am one of the few people who hadn't read this book, and I regret not picking it up sooner. Overall, the book pulled me in and with how it ended it left me really excited to start reading Crooked Kingdom soon! I really started shipping some of the characters and want more for them! I do like how the character relationships blossom from tolerance to liking each other. I’ve got hopes that in the second book the characters act on their feelings. There isn’t really any romance in the book, but I liked how there were hints in the book. I love how he plans in the book and hope to see much more of it in the next. He’s just brilliant, impossibly smart and daring. I just absolutely love Kaz! The intimidating criminal prodigy with a secret past. The female characters are awesome and just themselves. I keep picturing them in their early twenties. I kept forgetting they’re supposed to be sixteen/seventeen years old. I loved the characters! They are all just badass in their own way and them being anti-heroes just completes the circle. The story is very rich in details in all ways and I really like how Ketterdam is like an alternate Netherlands since I am Dutch. I also love how it’s set in the same universe as the Grisha trilogy but is completely different. The book got better and better towards the end and I had a hard time putting the book down. I think it being written in third person helped. But at the same time the speed of the books kept my interest. It was nonstop action and didn’t have many breathing moments. This book was a bit complicated due to the many POVs. I decided to read this with the Netflix show coming in April to avoid things being spoiled.
